Society sucks and that is that. My reasoning is that thye try to force their ideas on us on how we hould be but we are who we are and i am proud that i do not follow most stereotyping that hits me like i have to be geeky cause i wear classes and things like that. I am a writer and proud of it i am athletic as well. Erikson has it pinned with the identity crisis because the world is trying to make me be what it wants and not who i want to be. Adler said it as well with uniqueness being who you are and i am Damian J walker and proud of the fact i am not who society wants but who i am.
ReplyDeleteI believe the 5th stage of Erickson's crisis model which is identity vs role confusion. This is the adolescence stage where teens can decide what to do in their life. The african american women in the video were dealing with finding their identity. They had to chose who that wanted to be and how to show their characteristics.
ReplyDeleteFor the young african-american kids choosing a doll opposite to their skin color just shows how confused they are. They see white people on Tv more than black people and get the wrong impression on their own kind because they see the nice white lady selling toilet paper on TV. Commercial's sell mostly white dolls, if they were to show a black doll on the screen it would be for literally a second then they would boost about the other species.
ReplyDeleteIdentity and role confusion is the personality theory that carries the most weight. The girls in the video talked about the light skin vs. dark skin debate and that has a lot to do with pressure from society. Society has been known to favor white and light skin girls whereas darker girls don't get that much positive representation. Identity is distorted when you try to be and act like something you are not.
ReplyDeleteI think that today all society does is judge eachother and I don't believe it will ever change. There always has to be something that people can say or do to make them stand out from other people and some people don't like change or different so they judge. I think it's only natural it's a human instinct. Sometimes it's done without even realizing it's being done. The personality theory that I learned and I think carries the most weight in this situation is the defense mechanism "reaction formaton" because it has to do with people and their own insecurities and prejction because you don't like something about someone else so you say it about another person.
ReplyDeleteafter viewing the video i feel bad the black girls that feel as though they are not beautiful and like they have to live up to standards set by society.me i take good care of myself physically and mentally and i could care less about what people think of me. i am content with who i am, and very proud to be me. i wear what i want and speak what i feel because the ones that matter dont mind and the ones that have negative things to say really dont matter. i love everything about myself. I WOULDNT CHANGE A THING!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to sit here and lie and say that I understand what those girls are going through because i don't. I'm light skinned (not right now because of my summer tan) and I have really good hair; i don't need perms, relaxers, or any of that stuff because my hair is naturally curly and soft. I believe that Eric Erikson's crisis model kind of has a larger impact than the rest. I say that because of stage 5, which is usually when young ladies go through that whole 'i don't like the way i look' phase. Around our teens is when we start to have an identity crisis because we see how pretty another girl is and there's a part of us that wants to look like her or even be like her; so we constantly change the way we look and dress in order to feel accepted in society.
ReplyDeleteFrom the basic princibles that we talked about the little kids in the video were influenced by the outside world to believe that white meant good and black was evil. And they all showed the same behaviors towards the dolls in the rerun of the experiment that the gurl did. These both fall under the Unity category of basic princibles. Also all of the jawns in the video lacked uniqueness because they were upset with the way they looked and if they were unique they wouldn't want to fit in with the crowd they would want to stand out.
ReplyDelete-THOSE LIL KIDS WERE RACIST! && THE GURLS WERE UGLY!
This is nothing new. The difference in skin color and hair texture has always made a difference especially with younger kids and it's just getting worse. I worked the school district summer program and the first and second graders would call their peers "nappy-headed" if that's the way they felt. I think that the personality theory that has the most impact is the crisis model because the things that children learn in the early stages of their lives stick with them. For example, if a child learns that dark people are bad then they grow up that way until they find out for themselves.

ReplyDeleteThe theory most prevalent here is Ericksson's crisis model. I remember in school we always bussed on the dark kids in class. we used names such as tar baby, african booty scratcher and many more names.
The girls had to look a certain way to look pretty or to fit in. As if being dark skin is ugly. Light skin girls are better. If your hair is nappy and need a relaxer your hair is messed up. I would say that Adler personality theories of fitting in with the surrounding.
ReplyDeleteafter the video i think that certain people just have issues withthere selves because some light skin people don't have realaxed hair. My little sister is light skin and she is fully black and my other little sister is the darkest but it doesn't phase her. i think that it's just where you grow up at and how you were brought up because there are alot of beautiful darkskin people. adler's personality of the community is where all this takes place because it all depends on where you come from and who your around because people have different mind sets.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the clip of "A girl like me", I believe that you should love yourself for who you are, no matter what other people think. The societal pressures of being a young person in today’s world is based upon what other people want you to be, and you wanting to fit in with the "in" crowd. God created you the way you are for a reason, not because you have to fit in. The personality theory that best fits this clip is the Basic Principles, which was created by Adler. It all depends on what type of person you are within yourself. The race thing all matters depending on where you live at, and whom you are around on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteUmm I think that the Fued part of when, he explained that there is a part of life when it is yourself vs. you society. I think that also Social context, like how you used the world as you see it, could also apply to this video. Also during Ericksons crisis, there is a phase where you go though Role confusion and identity crisis.
ReplyDeleteyoung african american women in today's world are stressed over a lot of things because of what society thinks of them. it's sad that they can't enjoy everything in life without a judgement passed upon them. it seems as though the stage they're going through is identity vs. role confusion. they know what they want to be and look like but they can't deny what they really are. they want to know where they're from but knowing that they're from africa won't satisfy them. when they reach to their teenage years is where race matters because teenagers judge without reasoning.
ReplyDeletei think this is dumb you should like who you are no matter what. i think the main thing that comes in to play is identity v.s role confusion they dont kno who they really are.
ReplyDeleteI think it ridiculous that people act this way over skin color i think you should be proud of who you are. i think the personalities that went with this i think this is eric's you must solve one problem before moving on and in society the race problem has never been solved it's been moved to the back burner. people cant appreciate thm selves because of we used to be
ReplyDeletethe personality theories that carry the most weight would be erickson's theories. these girl's were going through stages of development, and some even crisis that should be solved before they can even move on in life and to accept themselves. i agree with some of the points made in the video, however, i think that all of the young ladies need to learn to be confident, and move from what is keeping them from doing such. it may be hard, but it won't be easy of course.
ReplyDeleteI think that the personality theory that has the most impact on people is defense mechanisms. Being a young girl growing up in today’s society is different from growing up in yesterday’s society. The girls have to deal with the personality reaction formation. Most of the girls seemed insecure about what women of African American heritage do with their hair and style to adjust to today’s society. So they try to be as close as African as possible.
ReplyDeleteI think that people should just accept the way they are instead of complaining and causing more problems for themselves, like bleaching there skin. There is no problem with getting your hair permed or putting weave in it. Today stars even get there hair permed and half the time it isn't evern there real hair. I think the personality development theory that fits this is the Erikson theory I think this because his idea of Crisis or challenge fit this topic. Like the reason for some of the peoples issues are caused because someone of importance or parent told them that being them is wrong so they start to develop self issues and if that person or parent told them it was ok to be who they are, there would be a higher chance of them likeing themselves, therefore less self issuses
