Maladaptive Behaviors

"Don't judge a book by it's cover" is an old proverb...what does it mean? Give examples. Be as specific as possible.

  1. don't judge a book by it's cover means to not judge anyone or anything before you come in contact with it. for example, don't judge a book by it's cover; the book may look stupid to you because of it's title and the way the cover looks, but you can open that book and it would be the best book you ever read. or for people, don't judge anyone before you meet them or by the way they look, because they may be the nicest person you ever met. that's exactly what don't judge a book by it's cover means.

  2. Don't judge a book by it's cover means that you shouldn't be so quick to conclude something without really getting a chance to get to know it not for what it looks like but for who it really is. I usually here this proverb reffering to people. You can't judge someone just from looking at them. They can appear to be one way but completely opposite of what they really are and if you don't get to know them you just make assumptions on what you see physically.

  3. Just because a person seems to be one way doesn't mean anything. Like having a disorder, just because a person seems one way doesn't mean that they are truly that way. A person with a disorder like Bipolar 1. They may seem extemely angry at one point, and you may meet them and think that they are indeed an angry person but they are not. They have highs and lows and if you meet them in either state then you will conceive a judgement about them based on their high or low. Or an obsessive compulsive person, you may be at dinner and they are always wanting things perfect, you may think that they are snobby and a perfectionist, when they really have a disorder.

  4. Don't judge a book by its cover means that you shouldn't judge someone or a situation based on outward appearances. It comes from not judging a literal book by its cover and reading the back or the flap first. Many people experience this based on race, age, weight, clothes, etc. I know that you can also judge someone by where they go to school or where they work. People think the adult that works at McDonald's is doing nothing with their life while the adult who works for the state is. I get judged by where I go to school because some people think that people that go here are a "certain" kind of people. I know I judge people but that doesn't make it right.

  5. I think that don't judge a book by its cover means that just because something looks a certain way does not mean that thats what they hold inside them, That's who they are. For example, there is a homeless man on the street and the people of the town calls him the old wacko, assuming that he is not educated and insane, due to the way he looks. Really this old homeless guy was a big intelligent lawyer who was the talk of his town in his day. He had won many cases and was known as a genius in his field. He had a few ups and downs later in his years which is the cause of his current situation. No one will ever know about his life because they judged him on his apperance and not his knowledge and him as a person.

  6. The quote "dont judge a book by its cover" means to not judge a person or thing before you meet them or come in contact with them. Examples of this saying would be if you see a new phone. It may look gay to you but when you start to use it, it turns out to be a really good phone. Another example would be a car, the car looks like a piece of junk but when you start to use it, it becomes the best car you ever had. For people, you could judge them either because they are ugly or they are known as to being mean but once you get to know them they turn out to be the nicest person you ever met

  7. Basically dont judge a person just by how they look or dress. People are so quick to judge a person just by how they look, that they dont get to the time to know them and they just have this impression that they're something that they're not just by how they dress. Of course we all know that African Americans are judged all the time. But we put that image in their heads that we're bad people by dressing a certain way and making songs that tell them we dont care when really they're many intellegent african american people. Every race is judged by other races just by how they dress or talk. People judge other races from their own race, its all how we act.

The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” means that things are not always what they appear to be. Like one time I remember there was a book named “Yes’ Yo” The cover was one black guy and one white guy. I looked at the cover and thought that I would not like the book but I read it and I loved the book. The book only has about ten words but it was a very deep book about two people over coming their cultural differences and vernacular differences to become best friends. I agree with the the phase “ you can judge a book by its cover.

  9. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" means that you can judge something or somebody based off of what you see. For example, when i walk around with baggy clothes on or pajama's people judge me because of what they see; but what they don't know is that im probably coming from practice or going to practice and i don't normally dress like that.

  10. Don't judge a book by its cover means that don't judge something or someone by how they look or act. Just because someone or something doesn't look too appealing on the outside doesn't mean they have something great within them. An example is someone with a physical disorder. So they may not look like everyone else on the outside, they are the equally same to everyone else personality wise. Another example is the way someone dresses. Someone may dress differently from everyone else and they wear they own personal style. Many people judge others by the way they dress or their lifestyle. It's not like they're weird, but more that they are unique.

  11. Ha this is easy don't judge a book by its cover. That means that you should not judge people by looks or appearences such as: when someone looks i don't know but they appear dumb but they may be extremely intellegent. Along with someone who dresses well looks all spiffy but they may be a total jerk underneath and be rude and things like that. You cannot judge someone by looks but by actions and ideas. That is my opinion on people judging others by looks that is stupid.

  12. "Don't Judge a book by its Cover", to me this proverb means that you shouldn't make consumptions about someone before you get to know them. For example you shouldn't judge a person based upon what other people told you about them. Once you get to know someone for yourself then its okay, to give your opinion about how YOU feel about them. Judging others isn't always the right way to get to know someone, you have to actually witness for yourself.

  13. DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER MEAN TO NOT JUDGE ANYONE BY THE WAY THEY LOOK BECUASE THEY MAY BE THE TOTAL OPPOSTIE OF WHAT YOU MAY THINK THAT THEY ARE AS A PERSON BECAUSE YOU JUST LOOKED ON THE OUTSIDE O A PERSON AND THEY COULD LOOK LIKE THERE SO RUDE BUT ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW THE PERSON THEY COULD BE THE NICEST PERSON YOU COULD EVER KNOW. I USED TO LOOK AT PEOPLE WHO WALKED AROUND AND THEY LOOK LIKED THEY WERE STUCK UP AND I USED TO THINK THAT UNTIL I GOT TO KNOW THE PERSON THEN I WOULD CHANGE MY MIND BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE THE NICEST PERSON IN THE WORLD AND YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO REALLY TALK TO THEM.

  14. I think that the proverb "Don't Judge a book by it's cover" is a powerful quote. The proverb is basically saying do not judge a book by it cover. With the book referring to people and the cover referring to their physical appearance. For example, some people may look crazy but are not really crazy. And many people would not know because they will judge them from how they look instead of who they really are. Another example, is when someone sees a person from a Iraq on a plane and automatically say that they are a terrorist. But in reality they may be a person living way before September 11 and adapted to American ways; but since they are not the Americans people are used to seeing on the plane they judge them. But the basic concept of the proverb is that you can not judge someone from the way you they look, so get to know them first.

  15. Don't judge a book by its cover is a very true proverb. Most of us can be quick to judge someone or something without knowing certain things. For example, if a girl wears certain clothes people judge her based on what she wears. If she wears short skirt and tank tops shes automatically a "hoe". Another example would be the title of a book or movie. If the title of a movie is something boring, we automatically assume that the movie is boring and based on only that. We never know who someone really is unless we get to know them better. We never know how good a movie or book is until we watch it. The girl who wears the slutty clothes may be the smartest girl you'll ever know. The movie with the boring title may be the best movie you ever watched. We make assumptions about people but I don't agree with judging people. We should judge someone by the way they appear, but by the actions they take when we get to truly know who they are.

  16. don't judge a book by its cover means don't judge people by the way they look. sometimes people think they can tell a person by their appearance. they don't even know the person and would just come at them like at their hair, clothes, or something relating to their appearance. an example would be... (usually in a girl's perspective)if they see a girl that has pretty hair, with heals, and they're just super pretty, the girl would think that girl is stuck up or something, and that's where girls like to compete with each other. because of that little jealousy they will probably never get to know each other and maybe they couldve been best friends. i never dealt with a situation like where i judge a girl like that but i know a lot of people that dealt with it with me. people usually judge me by my looks and they think im concieted until they get to know me. and they would tell me what their first impression of me was. they often say that they didnt expect me to be so nice and funny.

  17. The "judge a book by cover" means that you shouldnt judge anything if you dont know anything about it. Like for example if you see someone walking down then you with a mean face you shouldnt judge them of being a bad/mean person, they may have something wrong with him that day. Also with movies, they are something you shouldnt judge as well.

  18. Dont judge a book by its cover means dont judge someone by there first look with out even geting to know them. But in real life people dont do that everyone is always quick to judge someone by what they wear how they act and so on.People are always quick to judge especially on how they act but if you were to get to know them then you would understand why.

  19. It means that you shouldnt judge a person or anything by just looking at it. Example: A man walks into a room full of single ladies he is dressed to impress. He knows these ladies are going to be here. He flirt with a few ladies. then there is a man he walks into the same room and he is dressed in gym short and a tshirt the ladies dont pay him any attention not knowing the man that is dressed still lives with his parents and has 3 kids. the man that is not dressed owns a few places and has his own house &&no kids.

  20. a proverb is a short well-known saying that expresses an obvious truth and often offers advice. "dont judge a book b its cover", mean you cant judge things based on there outside appearance or how they may seem. just becasue something looks good it doesnt mean that is. for example..this weekend i decided to try a new ice cream other than my usual because the cover looked good but it was nasty.

  21. Don't judge a book by it's cover simply means that no matter how something looks on the outside, what's actually there on the inside can be really good. For example, if you meet this person who is ugly, you might not want to talk to them because you think "eww, i can't be seen with this person" and then you don't even talk to them. but if you talk to them, maybe they will end up being your best friend or even more so you never know. you can't just go off of first impressions sometimes, usually after you get to know the person you end up liking them

  22. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" this to me means just because something appears to be a certain way or is presented to you in one way doesn't mean that you should judge that person or whatever it may be. Like they always say looks can be deceiving, a great example of this would be people like me doubting Kevin Kolb. And what do you know he ends up setting a NFL record for throwing 300 hards in his first two NFL starts. So iGuess iJudged him without giving him a fair chance to prove himself to me and as a true Eagles fan iAm proud that he grew up infront of our home fans.

  23. Don't judge a book by it's cover means don't make an assumption about something or someone until you know more about them. It's easy to look at someone and say they're anything under the sun but it's better to make a judgment based on fact and not bias, unsupported opinion. It is exactly like looking at a book cover and saying that you are not interested in the book. You know about the book but you automatically refuse to try something you actually might like. For example, looking at someone asking for change on the street. Yes, they make look a little dirty but for all you know the begging is a social experiment about humanity and you look like monsters to them.
