Yesterday we looked at the construct of the personality and then added some question of race and when the recognition of it occurs and why. Read
this article and see if your opinion changes as to when babies are able to discriminate distinctions in skin color.
WEll taht article point out many things for instance that children are more open mindedbefore society corrupts them into believing stereo types and racial ideas. The older children in the study were unchanged though due to the constant influence of racial ideas and society what we need to do is to raise a generation worldwide and make them stop hearing stereo types and racial ideas on who does what. That would mean raising them in ignorance but at the time of their ignorance is a time of bliss and understanding then when the stereo types are introduced they will not listen or even pay them mind but much prefrerably say that those stereo types are untrue i mean some but only because society has influenced the races to believe them we need to erase them to make the world better.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't surprise me when the article said that white families didn't talk about race as much as nonwhite families. I can't speak for how white people raise their children, but for them not to teach their child about race shortchanges them in the end. It's not to say they're racist, but it shows for distorted perceptions of race. A prime example is when I'm in a public place like the mall. Small white children just stare at me like they've never seen "one of those" before. I doubt they've never seen a brown person before but if their parents not only taught them about race and most definitely not to stare, there wouldn't be a problem. Children learn by example and telling them that "everyone is equal" doesn't do anything. It just reinforces how uncomfortable it is for certain people to talk about race. I know I can talk about race because I'm black but there is no excuse. Since our president is “brown” should open up a dialogue about race. It shouldn’t start with “brown people can do anything” but about how hard it is to do things without being judged by skin color. I really don’t like how small children just think black people aren’t nice. Maybe that’s why some black kids grow up not liking white people in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI had no clue what was discussed yesterday due to my absence but from what I have read in this article race is not talked about like it should. Though to me it seems baseless it still needs to be addressed because it is a real thing that is pushed underneath the carpet of society. In a study where they were placed in shirts of red and blue when it came to question asking the children of different colors had strong opinions about their different colored counterparts. This is the same thing that we teach our children unbeknownst to us. We place hidden stereotypes and barriers on people who are of a different race or even the same race because it can go either way. These types of things should be discussed while a child is young and the mind is still being developed and is in an embryonic stage instead of talking to them about it later or even not at all. Because the sad fact is that not everyone is equal.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article i see now that caucasian parents are more strict in mentioning race to their kids. Caucasian people were raced different as we all know. African americans were the non-dominate species a few decades ago and racism was a way to prove it. Caucasians progressed to a level of hate for african american people to the point were we had to fight for human rights. So today with the more modern America racism is still a big topic but its not half as bad as 50 years ago. TV effects our kids the most bacuase what they see on TV is what they interprid in their mind and whatever their parents tell them is what they believe until told different. So if kids are taught that the opposite race is bad then thats what they believe.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that babies are able to discriminate distinctions in skin color on their own. It can usually start at home and then society takes over from there. I was suprised when Vittrup asked the children if their parents liked black people and 14% said no. I was also suprosed when 38% said that they didn't know. I believe that this study has taught us something in a way. Truthfully, we know that race shouldn't be an issue but we don't inforce that. Kids see how their parents treat a certain race, so they think its ok for them to do the same. As i said earlier, babies aren't able to discriminate distinctions in skin color on their own because it starts with the parents and society finishes the job.
ReplyDeletei think that kids are very smart and they can find the difference by them selves. but to grow up hating another race you are taught that way. i think white kids see the see nad hear the negative and they get that perspective and vise versa. it all depends 0n how you grow up. the whole racial idea. its about there surrondings if a black person grew up with friends who hated white people and grew up with parents who hated them and everybody in there society hated them then 9 times out of 10 they will to. its how they grow up.
ReplyDeletemy opinion of children being able to discriminate doesn't change because i always figured they got it from their parents. very few get it from their parents, some get it from their friends, and if their parents don't correct it then it is then parent's fault. i think that if children were not exposed to discrmination at all then it wouldn't be a problem, then the children wouldn't be able to see color. they usually don't notice until someone close to them points it out, and nine times out of ten if it's the parents or someone older then that's what the children will follow.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion as to when babies are able to discriminate distinctions in skin color has not changed. i belive that children will be more familiar with what they see and affraid of things that they rarely see because its different. whether white or black children are affraid of things they dont know, its not racisim when it comes to babies its just unknowing.on the other hand if babies are brought up in a racist family and told bad things about other ethnicities then their own then of course there going to consider "not many" of them nice. children believe anything they hear when they hear it over and over, if a child constantly hears bad things about blacks then that what they'll believe and they will have the same beliefs as they get older. i agree when they say children naturally develop favoritism because everyone has preferences.
ReplyDeleteDuring the one experiment that was did with the kids with the blue and red shirts it never really mattered to the kids they always played openly with each other. When asked which one is better of course the children are going to pick themselves its the ego in them there not going to put someone else before them. In the society a child dosent know the difference in the beginning when the parents had to do the movies and discuse racial things with there child they started to drop out. As they claim they didnt want to discuse that with there child because they didnt want then to get the wrong idea. I feel as though a child is going to get a wrong idea or impression is because the parent puts that in there mind. I also dont like the fact of how some parents avoid talking about the race of Obama because hes black and they dont feel as though they should put that into there mind.
ReplyDeleteBabies or little kids are very much able to notice race at very young ages. Whether it's from your parents telling you about race or them trying to hind it and you finding out on your own, but reguardless kids are exposed to race all the time. The article made some tests that were very funny if you ask me, iBet they asked these dumb lil white kids who are from like the most racists families ever to do those surveys which 100% of them said that white is good and black is bad.[wat ashame] Then he asked families to watch children shows to see if their views changed but some families who iThink were trying to hide their racism didn't even watch the shows [lame], but even those who watched them their views didn't change at all.[wtf] This is so funny how can you watch Little Bill and think black people are bad [lmfao] people are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI think that the babies being able to discriminate like that all depend on how you teach them and what they watch on television. I see the points of not bringing it up. I think it makes perfect sense why they don't want to teach their children about race. Bringing up the topic of race puts another category for children to discriminate, and it could be good or bad. Maybe the parents don't like the other color and don't want their children to go into that mindset so they don't speak of it. I do think that if you can teach your children about race and not be biased about it, show that everyone is equal and should be treated so, that you should. Children sometimes learn more from their parents' behavior and teachings sometimes than they can learn anywhere else
ReplyDeleteWell this sort of dont change my opinions because it sort of agrees with me that this type of subject depends on the family, that important person or parent. That important person or parents have a great impact on the way children take to "interacial friendship". I agree with the article when it says that the enviorment has a big impact as well. Like when the parents expose there children to many different cultures the child will learn from experience instead of verbal lessons. I also think that experiences in school can help too. If a child is at home and is not exposed to different cultures, schools diversity can help with this type of situation. When children go to school they can learn that people with different culural backgrounds can be good people even when there not getting that message at home.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that my opinion changed much from yesterday. I still believe that it depends on where a child is raised or how they are raised that determines that. Like maybe if a child goes to school with a white teacher how acts kind to them, while at the same time they have a neighborhood that everyone threats everyone else bad. The article also says that for decades, children see races as society depicts them. I think this also relates to my theory and why I think some children's personality comes from their society.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that at a young age children are able to discriminate distinctions in skin color. In the article some children were able to discriminate distinctions in skin color by themselves, while some learned from their parents. By the age of 3 is when a parent should talk to their child about race. Reason being is because children like to group according to favoritism. The article said that skin color is visible and that's the reason children will separate themselves in different groups, no matter how parents try to make things colorblind. Their was a study on babies that included showing the babies pictures of faces and that the babies would stare longer at a face that was a different race of their parents. Overall the article said that its important to talk to children when their young about race because they are in their developmental stage and are already making conclusions about it.

ReplyDeleteI think that racism is not a natural thing. I think it is some thing that is passed down from generation to generation. But I do think that kids do like to be out of their comfort zone. So if you are raised around nothing but white people you will most likely feel uncomfortable or out of place in a crowd of black people. Does that mean you are racist? YES! Obviously your parents didn’t have you around enough black people in your racist life and that makes them and you (The off-spring of their racist seed) racist! I know what you are thinking right now “But Ronald, What if my parents didn’t know any black people?” I don’t care! You along with them are still racist. There are projects, crack houses and bad parts of towns all over America. Your parents could have found one and dropped you off!
Babies are able to discriminate distinctions in skin color depending on how their parents raise them. it seems as though white parents don't want to mention race in their house, but when the child is surrounded by the society and different types of race their probably not going to say anything good because their parents never said anything good either. i thought it was odd how some of the families agreed to do the "experiment" but then decided to back down when it came to discussing about race.
ReplyDeleteI think people are able to distinct between skin color as young children due to the influence of their parents. The article said that most white familes don't discuss skin color as much as nonwhite famililes. That causes the children of white families to not understand that everyone is equal, and then they look at colored people differently. I think racial stereotypes and barriers come from the parents of children because that's how they raise their kids. If the parents don't like colored people, there's a large chance that they would teach to their kids to not like them either.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, compared to yesterdays lesson I believe that race is not discussed the right way. I don’t believe that race should be introduced to children that young or even introduced at all, you are who you are. When children are taught about race at a young age; they take that information and run with it. We now live in a non-segregated world, so let it be just that, if the children find something wrong with it they will figure it out on their own. All this test study and research is unnecessary. To say for example a child that is in pre-school loves to play with EVERYBODY, and he has a friend who is African American, and after a couple of talks about "race" with his parents he no longer wants to be friends with the kid because of his skin color. Let children be children.
ReplyDeletei think that babies are able to determine skin color at a young age because of there surroundings if someone or something doesn't look like what there use to seeing then they will think of that person as different becuase they don't look like the people in there family. children start to realize at a very young age that peopl have different skin as well as different genders and as they get older it start to get clearer that everyone is different but everyone is still the same. it also depends on how you were raised and what morals and things your parents raised you on. if you parents are racist then you may become racist but if you are born with cross race parents then it may make it easier to have white and black friends
ReplyDeleteI really don’t think babies can discriminate on distinctions on race. I think that babies will do whatever they see their parents do. If the baby sees their mom playing with a pink toy then the baby will want to play with the pink toy. And if the baby see a white Barbie doll on television being played with, then the baby will want to play with it also. I also don’t think the children age five through seven can distinguish race at such a young age. They will also do whatever is being shown on television or what is being down in their household. Kids and babies will always follow something else because they can not comprehend the meaning of skin color at a very young age. And I also think that the reason kids do mainly choose the white Barbie doll over the black one is how they are taught in their society.
ReplyDeleteThis article didnt surprise me at all. I knew that most white families hardly even discuss with their kids about race and ethnicity. But the studies that the article showed were interesting. A lot of kids are questioning race even when they are 5 or younger. To me that is amazing, because i wouldnt think that children would care at that young of an age. But its also crazy how parents dont even talk to their kids about race! To continue with babies, all the questions they asked were reasonable. They like what they are familar with, and they are unaware with kids their own age that are of unfamilar race. This doesnt make them racist at all, but they just want to understand what is going on around them. And this is the time that parents need to start talking to their kids, because soon they will just follow what their parents are doing (whether good or bad) or make their own decisions (whether good or bad)
ReplyDeleteMy opinion is basically the same as what I thought. I don't think children should be expose to race when their young. Young kids should not make any decision on what they parents said about race. That can affect a kid when making decesion or making friends at school. Or even just starting problem because they think the other race is bad or to mean to be friends with. I think all kids are colorblind until they start to learn about race. I think parents should wait till they know they child is mature enough to learn about race or know that their child has good attention towards people.
ReplyDeleteWow. What shocked me most was when the families dropped out. If they are not able to talk to their children about race then they make it seem like a bad thing. If you show children that something is negative then they will treat it as a negative thing until they know for themselves. Then comes to the Santa thing. I reminds me of an episode of Family Guy when Stewie was among many races of children. They all had a different view of what their Santa looked like or what race they were.
