Have a fish because they don't bother and sometimes a pleasure to have. They don't talk back like children do or act up like children do. A fish can be easy to take care of at times, well until you have to clean the tank but you always have to clean up after children. So why a fish? A fish because they are easier to take care of than a child. A fish is dominated by the superego, while a child is dominated by the Id.
The fish i believe is just because that a fish and cat are enemies. Just like the id and superego are enemies in reality. On the aspect of enemies humans more rather children are the mediators between the two. Now children represent the developement of people where as at first they acted on the id to have fun but as the damages went up and the fish started to influence the kids they moved to the superego and later on they shifted to a regular ego as people do in life while developing that is why toddlers and kids about six are tattle tales. Lol but anyway that is why the good doctor used fish and children.
it's a childrens book so they used a fish and children because they thought that kids would be able to relate to the kids more if they can picture kids like themselves and a talking pet fish. kids think that a pet fish is interesting at a certain age because they don't know any better there only at a certain stage for there age according to frueds development theory there just going to believe what they see because they think that it is the right thing to do.
The use of the fish and children in the book was to keep the child entertained when they read it. Children have short attention spans so the use of characters with human qualities would keep them entertained and into the book. Because when I was a little kid I would never like books unless they had pictures and come to think about it its still that way today. So in order to have a successful childrens book you have to keep their attention throughout the book and in the Cat in the Hat, the children and the fish were used for the childrens sake so that they would enjoy the book.
I think that they use the characters; the fish, and the children in the book THE CAT IN THE HAT, because it's a children’s book. The imagery of the fish and the children represents the childhood like things that younger kids can relate to. Dr. Seuss figured that if there was a connection between the children in the book and the children who read it, it would make them become more engaged in the book. Most children find it extremely interesting when there are animals in a book that talk and have human like qualities. Children who read this book find it amusing the way the children react to the actions of the cat in the book.
The fish used for imagery as a replacement of the mother. Since the mother was absent throughout most of the story, the fish was the metaphorical mother that tried to keep things in check.
The children were used for imagery because they help make the story. It would've been pointless to have the cat come into the house to just get on the fishes nerves. The children were the reason for why everything happened.
The reason that Dr. Seuss uses children in his story is too maybe connect with the readers so that they can have a better understanding of the story. They would think of themselves in the situation and how they would handle it. As for the fish, i feel that Dr. Seuss used a fish because it is a simple animanl and mostly every kid has at least one in their lifetime ....
In Cat in the Hat, I think Dr. Suess used a fish as the superego character because fish really don't do anything but mope around their tank and they're probably miserable, just swimming around in a closed space. So the fish is probably just mad and has nothing better to do except for stop all the fun.
Children are naive and do what they want to do on impulse sometimes, showing an ego side. When children are under pressure, they do as they are told, so when the cat came and caused a mess, they had no choice but to go along with it.
why a fish? i think it's because they don't do anything but swim in the tank. they arent exposed to anything outrageous. i dont't think fishes are curious about anything so they wouldnt really wonder around all the place like a cat would.
why children? because they are innocent. they don't know what to do until they are told to do so. sometimes children need a make a decision if they want to listen to the id or not. if they listen to the id then they will get in big trouble.
Cats usually eat fish so they're the bigger prey compared to a fish. I guess its sort of irony that in the story the fish is being the bigger, mature person and the cat is basically acting like a child. Basically the fish is a higher power symbol sort of like jesus. The children are sad and sobbing being urged to come outside to play but their mom has abandonded them. The cat walks in and urges the kids to play games and mess up the house. The fish continues to be the jesus like figure and state the children cannot play. The children are being forced to play or in freudian terms lose control of their small lives. At the end the cat cleans up the mess or cleans up their lives with a machine.
I think that he chose them because they are complete opposites and they balance eachother out. They are complete opposites both mentally and physically. Even the Cat to the Fish and the Children to the Cat. They are all complete opposites and juxtapose eachother. Who would think of a Cat and a Fish being so mentally structured and perfect examples of the human mind?
The use of the fish was to get young kids interested in reading the book. The fish represents authority and kids wouldn't be so interested if the fish character would have just been a human instead. The use of the children was so kids could have someone to relate to. The story uses the kids to entertain.
I think the imagery of the fish was the conscious of the two children and it some what brought out the innocence that they had. Sort of like the grasshopper in pinokio. Its a guide to stop them from the trouble they may want to cause. The children because every child or adult needs some type of guidence in life. They always need that one person or thing to give them a little push and to make them stop and think about there decisions that they make.I also think the imagery was to show that everyone has an inner child and have obsticles they need to over come.
I think that Doctor Seuss used the symbol of children because that was like the prime theme back in those times. Like Fat Albert and the Peanuts. They use children I guess to make it easier to teach someone. I would be difficult if they were to use adults because adults can think for themselves. Probably the only thing a young child thinks about is to explore things and to have fun. Fish??...I really don’t know why he used the symbol of fish. I don’t really think they symbolize anything special but being fish. I mean they could use it because that was the only animal Seuss could think of, but I don’t think it was really a theme of anything.
Children are always easy to trick or convince to do things, so they were the perfect victims for this. The cat had next to no resistance from the children. The cat is an enemy of a fish so that's probably why they used that.
I think the children represented innocence. The absence of knowing or making the right choice and also the fear of authority, “Mother”. I think the fish is made to be the polar opposite of the cat. It is made to be the antithesis of the cat and to make things right. It’s more like an angel and a devil on your shoulder concept because in theory they were each telling the children to do the opposite of the other.
I think that in the story the fish and the children because the fish represents mortality and auhority. Children are easily able to be rebellious because if an adult was used in the story I think it would change the whole meaning. The idea of using younger children plays a role as well rather than using teenagers. I think that they tried to choose characters that younger children can relate to and the idea of every young child has a gold fish.
dr. seuss might have had a reason to pick his characters. i think he chose children because they are innocent, and did not know any better. they are what made the story, because if they were adults then the cat in the hat wouldn't have been in the house. i think he chose the fish because the fish is unable to do something about the cat too. it's not like he can jump out of his tank do anything to the cat. so he did it so that the cat can remain in the story. that's my assumption...maybe it isn't right...but this is what i think.
Ronald Silver I think that Dr. Seuss used a fish in The Cat in the Hat to represent the superego because through out history fishes have been important symbols in many cultures. In the Disney classic Pinocchio a whale eats Pinocchio, in the bible Jesus feeds five thousand people with a loaf of bread and two fish. Another reason why Dr. Seuss choose to use a fish in the book is because the Cat and Fish in nature have a hunter/pray relationship. I think that Dr. Seuss used kids to show a growth in maturity. In the beginning the kids are Id and impulsive. In the middle and end the kids are ego and they balance out the cats Id and the Fish’s superego. So if you think about it the house in The Cat in the Hat is a metaphor for the human mind. The Cat was the Id, The Fish is the SuperEgo and the Kids are the Ego.
the fish is in the story as the ego personality to balance things out in the house a while the mom was not home.the kids represent the id and are included in the story for the child like perspective and explaining that unlike the cat they know right from wrong. the fish is the one to tell the cat that his actions will not be tolerated meaning he is all knowing
The author Dr. Seuss used the characters the fish and the children to give his characters more emphasis on Freudian theory. Fishes live, sleep, and eat in water all the time. In many novels or books based on a Freudian theory, water represent cleanse and renewal. By the fish portraying the superego personality; the water gives the fish more of a deeper connection. Since water represent cleanse and fish live in water, the fish is the only appropriate character to portray the superego. The children are also a good example of the Freudian theory. In reality and fantasy children are the ones with imperfect judgment. The usually will do what they please, but then choose the right decision. That’s why the children are the perfect portrayal of the ego personality. The ego which represents a balance of the superego and the id is the perfect example of how children really are. Children will always choose to play before they do their work. They will also choose a bad decision over the good but in some way figure out a way to change from bad to good.
Have a fish because they don't bother and sometimes a pleasure to have. They don't talk back like children do or act up like children do. A fish can be easy to take care of at times, well until you have to clean the tank but you always have to clean up after children. So why a fish?
