Welcome Back - Stigma
Good Morning. Back to the grind for a half hour. I would like for you to write 15 lines answering the following prompt: "LABEL JARS, NOT PEOPLE" is a rallying cry for those people with mental disabilities. What does it mean to be called your illness? Have you ever used the words "crazy", "retarded", or "insane"? What are the differences between these words and more ethnic oriented slurs?

I honestly have an idea on what it is but insane is something i say to people who say random out of place things loudly for everyone to hear it around us. But ethnic slurs are intentionally offensive and are meant to hurt others were as when i call someone insane i am kidding and or mean it as a compliment due to my own hatred of what is called normal behavior i do the same for crazy and weird but i do not use the word retarded i do not like that word but like calling someone a redneck or hick that is saying they are just dumb farm folk which is stupid to make people think that that is ok in any way so this world sucks monkeys anyway i am done ranting for now.

ReplyDeleteI think that this saying stabs me in the heart. I think that those names like retarded and crazy and just like ethnic slurs such as nigger and wetback. This is very hurting to me only because even though I have never called a mentally challenged person retarded or crazy I have called everyday people that like teachers, bosses, and friends. There is no difference between an ethnic slur and a slur based on mental capabilities and dysfunction. They both are wrong, demoralizing, educationally foolish, and shows a lack of respect for not only the person but for themselves. I would hate to be only known for my illness and I would hate to be only known for my race, there is still complexities inside a damaged mental state, they are still human, and we could be in the same state as they are.
ReplyDeleteI have used words such as crazy, retarded and insane. I use insane to refer to myself sometimes. These words differ from ethnic slurs because people think racism is meaner than discriminating against people with mental illness. Sometimes people need to be labeled so you can know how to treat their illness. If you have a mental disabilities, you should know about it and not care about being labeled if it will help you in the long run. It isn't helpful to be called by your illness instead of your name. But it's not right to call names because it is not helpful because it can be hurtful. The real difference is that people don't understand mental problems and don't know how to act.
ReplyDeleteI think being called your illness is a thing that people use in order to let you know your exact place in society. Its not right because that person can't help that there is something wrong with them. I mean i have used the words retarted, crazy and insane but i never used them to refer to a person with one of those illnesses. I only use them when im talking to my friends and they do or say something that causes me to say that. I believe the differences between these words and ethnic oriented slurs is that ethinc oriented slurs can be counted as a racial slur. Either way its not right to call anybody anything besides their name.
ReplyDeleteTo Label jars, not people means to not label people as you see them or judge them on weather not they are good or bad you should get to know them first. Well to tell you the truth i dont know what it feels like to be called your illness because i personaly dont have one but i bet it dosent feel very good they probley tend to feel bad and dont want to express themselves and exclude themselves from the world and always think that someone is judging them. I have used those words they are pretty much the same.
ReplyDeleteMany people use retarded, crazy, and insane as funny ways to call people. As for me when someone does something funny I call them retarded. When I call someone insane I do that because they have done something that I can never push myself to do. And when you call someone crazy I also call them that when they also do something that I am not able to push myself to do. When I say these words to people I dont mean the exact definition, but I am jokng while I say it. These words are different then ethic slurs because ethnic slurs have one "harsh" meaning, while calling someone by their illness has many different meanings to it. (Not all of it describing the illness.)

ReplyDelete"LABEL JARS, NOT PEOPLE" is a rallying cry for those people with mental disabilities. What does it mean to be called your illness? I think that being called your illness would be offensive, and I wouldn’t like being called a mental illness. Have you ever used the words "crazy", "retarded", or "insane"? Yes I have used these words before, I did not think about the crazy or retarded people when I say them. But insane, I always thought it was a medical term. Just like madness or the silly willies. What are the differences between these words and more ethnic oriented slurs? The difference is that crazy people were not enslaved for 400 years and beaten and abused, although using crazies for free labor would be a easy and inexpensive source for free labor!
The difference between these words and more ethnic oriented slurs is that the slurs deal with more race than the person's personality. It's a broad word or phrase about someone's race. When someone calls you by your illness, it means they judge you by what kind of illness you have, in example, calling someone retarded when they're just mentally ill.
ReplyDeleteI have used the words crazy, retarded, and insane to describe people but I wasn't referring to them in the correct actual meaning of the word. I think that crazy and insane are similar to eachother and retarded has to do with not being able to function normally because your brain won't allow you too. I think that Label, Jar, Not people means that we mostly judge people without being educated. We could say something about someone with a disbality without knowing what it really is with using a general term to describe all of them the same way.
ReplyDeleteBeing called by your illness means being judged and labled. I have called people crazy and retarded but only because of the way they acted. I always judge people by the way they act after I meet them or get to know them. Calling someone crazy or retarded offends people that really have these disorders. This is like when people use the term "gay" when something goes wrong and this often offends people that are gay. This are very similiar to ethnic oriented slurs because its offensive and a little racist.
ReplyDeleteTo label jars not people means to not judge people on there appearence because many people have issues that you are not aware of and you might label them as one thing and it turns out that they have some type of disorder. To be your illness means that you are the one that is keeping yourself from doing what you want because of some type of mental illness or something of that nature. i have used the words crazy retarted and insane when i refer to people doing something stupid but sometimes i learn that all the crasy retarted and insane things that people do all come from something that has happened in there life.
ReplyDeleteTo be called your illness means to be classified under that. I have used those words before, but not as derogatory to the people. If they were retarded I would have said that, but i didn't go around saying "oh hey look at that retard haha." I had seizure disorders a while ago, and i know i wouldn't want to be teased because of it. it's not something i can control so i can't make fun of other people with the same uncontrollable problems. there's not much difference between ethnic slurs and those terms. they're both meant to belittle others and make them feel less of themselves. people call you black or mexican or something and it can be meant as something really bad.
ReplyDeleteto call someone their illness is to say they have nothing else to offer but their sickness as a single characteristic of ones self. Using the words you have listed above are strong words with diferent meanings. I can honestly say that i have used these words but i have to watch how i use them because they are very complex words. The difference between theses words and ethinic slurs is that many people may define them as one to whereas others may define it as something else. Some people may see it as offensive some may not; it depends upon who you say it to and how you use the word.
ReplyDeletei use words like crazy, insane, and retarded all the time but im usually talking to a friend that is not mentally ill but that how we play around like that with not intention of hurting anyones feelings or the thought of anyone with a serious mental disability. no should label people even if they do have a mental disability because they are human too they just need extra help and learn differently then everyone else. i dont think there's a difference between crazy, retarded, and insane because in all those disabilities someone is not in there right mind. to be called your illness is almost like you are human and you are only what you are and that's not true.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between the words crazy, retarded and insane and other ethnic oriented slurs is that its offensive to people. People who have classified illnesses are sometimes called retarded, crazy or insane and that can be offensive to people. They’re appropriate terms to call people who are mentally incapable of thinking like other people. Same with people of different ethnic origins, they’re racial slurs to call people of different races. It’s a put down and people take highly offense to that. I've used the words retarded, crazy and insane but never said them to somebody's face who's actually categorized as having an illness.
ReplyDeleteto be called your illness is basically saying that the person is only their sickness and it's like they are labeling them as that, no other personality characteristic. i have definitely used all of those words, but i have to watch how i use it, because they can be degrading. crazy to me means the same as insane, your mind is basically out of wack. retarded means someone is below their actual ability to learn or function. i don't think there is a difference because they are all offensive to someone that have these conditions. these words basically label them, it is similar to an ethnic slur. so overall people should watch what they say to or about others that are diagnosed with certain illnesses. the more people use these words in the incorrect context the more people might think they have these conditions.
ReplyDeleteI think that to be called your illness is an insult. A person is not their illness they are just affected by their illness. I think that it is very rode to judge people by something that they can not help. However I did call people crazy or insane because they were doing somethings that I would never do. For example, I saw some people talking to themselves in public and stuff like that. But I did say it directly to them, because if I think they are crazy then they might try to get me. And it is not really nice to call somebody crazy when you do not really know them. I think that their is a big difference between being called crazy, retarded, and insane. I think that crazy and insane are like the same, in which people do things unlike others or what your use to. And retarded is like being called stupid with a lot of emphasis on it.
