Follow up to Friday's activity

Normally one of the things that is a concluding piece to an "experiment" like we conducted on Friday (watching people at Strawberry Square) is the write up of the lab. Follow these guidlines:

  1. Paragraph One:
    • In your own words describe the purpose of the experiment.
  2. Paragraph Two:
    • Summarize the procedure.
    • Explain the setup of the lab.
  3. Paragraph Three
    • Describe the outcome of the experiment and how it supports or rejects your hypothesis.
    • BE VERY SPECIFIC!
    • From your analysis, point out certain trends or patterns that support your conclusion.

  1. On Friday we went over to Strawberry Square to observe individuals actions. For example, we had to observe a couple having breakfast together; observe their body language and their expressions. Overall, the point was to look deeper into the way they looked at one another, and try to determine certain things.

The porcedure was to sit down or walk around and take notes on people in Strawberry Square. In other words observe them, as I discussed previously.

The outcome of the experiment was normal to me. However, the couple that may have seemed happy, they even could have been talking about divorce. We were reading their body language, but we did not hear their conversation, so they could have been talking about anything. We were right about our observations about other things. For example, the men sittinga t the table with the hats on. They were work buddies that were out for breakfast. As well as the family with the cihldren.

That sums up our Friday outing at Strawberry Square.

  2. The purpose of the experiment was to see if we could describe and observe the behaviors of other people without talking to them. What we did was, we were given a set of questions and then asked to observe random people and describe their tactics without verbal communication and without being disrespectful and invading their personal space. Our subject for the lab were people having breakfast at Strawberry Square. Our task, as explained earlier in the blog, was to observe people eating breakfast. From the experiment I remember this one guy who had this white sox hat on and he really looked lost, that really made him stand out to me because he just kept going around in circles and he most likely wasn't from here. Then a very similar trend I seen was that co-workers tend to eat together and talk about work.

  3. The purpose of this experiment was to observe people and see how they acted in their environment. Honestly I found this rather fun to watch people and learn about them so they did not know. I think experiment was trying to teach us to be open minded and just watch and listen to people. We learned some interesting info into the lives of complete strangers and it was interesting though not important to us in any specific way but it was a lesson. The body language of most though was comical for silly reasons.

The procedure was easy enough we simply moved as if we were just wandering around and then watching people without getting caught. We also listened but if moving continued to do so and caught glimpses of conversation. We took notes of what we observed and wrote down explanations of behavior and such it was rather fun still. The setup was simple as well we simply moved among the people and watched them but used our own judgment to when enough was enough.

I was going in to observe and would probably learn about strangers no information that might assist me in any way but still learn something. Truth be told I did learn some unnecessary information on people I did not know so I guess I was right. One noticeable thing is that people who work together hang out together I saw this on many occasions during our experiment and on another note people who are not friends per say have nervous conversations while standing in lines.

  4. I think that the purpose of this exercise was to observe people and to see if we could analyze them without even talking to them or knowing them at all. It was to help us try to understand people a little more and I also think it has something to do with our topic that day which was body language. While we observed these people we looked at their body language which did tell us a lot about how they were feeling at that time. This exercise also helped us see how people interact with others and I learned that you could tell a lot about a person you don’t know just by observing them. Or at least you can conclude what you think you may know about someone.

The procedure for this lab was to go out in a public place where we were most likely to find people having breakfast or talking. Our group picked Flamingo’s because we knew that we would find people there having breakfast and conversation. We had to observe people without them knowing that we were observing them because people’s actions tend to change when they realize that someone’s watching them. There were just random types of everyday people that wouldn’t be hard to find. Just by looking at them we had to write down what we thought of them and what kind of life they had just by looking at them.

Overall our outcome of this project was good because we found most of what we were looking for and we didn’t have too much trouble. The only part that was difficult was finding a family or a small child but at the very end we found the child at Strawberry Square. I think that part was hard because not too many people are out with their families at 9 in the morning. This observation did make me start to think a little more when I see people I would look at them and try to analyze them just by their appearance.

  5. The purpose of the experiment was to observe people and there actions and try to conclude there thoughts and feelings. One can determine some ones mood by there actions and the way they speak, and that’s what we observed. Body language not only shows how people react with one another but it tells people attitudes.
The procedure of the experiment was to find certain people doing different things and write down their expressions. We had to observe what their conversations were about and their relationship with each other. The lab set up went from individual, then to couples, and then families. Every individual, couple, and family was different.
The outcome of the experiment was that if someone looks unhappy then most likely they are. The way someone looks on the outside usually determines how they are feeling in the inside. The lab also shows that people are more happy and sociable when they are with someone else.

  6. On Friday, we went around the stores and Strawberry Square. We observed people doing their early morning routines. The purpose was to see how people act. Also, some questions required us to observe various groups. This allowed us to compare and contrast the differences between different people and age groups.
We were told to observe people downtown here on Market Street up to the flamingo. Our group went to all of the open stores and looked at the people there first since most went to Strawberry Square. We were to watch them without creeping them out and making it obvious. We kept our distance and watched/listened to others. Some were walking to the bus stop talking to their friends while others were just standing around.
While doing this experiment we saw some of the same things. People were just sitting down eating breakfast. They were standing out side under something to avoid the rain or walking around with an umbrella. The people with friends seemed to be having pleasant early morning conversations with eachother. This is basically all we did friday.

This experiment was about observing people outside downtown. We went to Strawberry square and watched people to answer questions such as people such as “what makes people with sports teams clothing on different.” I think that this experiment was to get us to observe others.

The procedure was that we broke into groups and walked around downtown and watched people and answers the questions Mr. V gave us. My group choose to stay outside and go in the stores to find the answers to our questions. I personally thought that we were not going to find anyone outside because it was raining and it was early but the only questions we were not able to answer were the ones about the kids.

The outcome of the experiment was that we saw many people and answered most of our questions. I thought that the only people we would see is homeless people out that early. But we saw others that didn’t look homeless which was not a surprise since we are right in the middle of the business division of downtown, but we also saw a lot of normal looking people and children downtown.

  8. The purpose of this experiment of observing random people you don’t know is to see if you can judge a book by its cover. Many people judge people by what they got on, what they say, and how they look. When you judge people like this you are not going to know the accurate information about them. In doing this process you can see just another way people judge every day people.

Initial we were supposed to go to Strawberry Square and observe random people but instead we went to Flamingos. We first ordered food because we didn’t want to sit in Flamingos looking stupid by just observing the people around us. Then we started answering the questions one by one but we tried to be very precise by watching the person’s every move. We did not get ever question but the questions that we did answered were answered very detailed.

The outcome of this experiment was that you can not actually judge a person accurately by observing some of their actions. By judging someone you can never know the “real” them because you’re making an inaccurate assumption based on the stereotypes you know. This experiment could be an important experiment to show people that judging someone by what they got on, what they say, and how they look.

  9. The Purpose of Friday's expiriment was to watch people's body language & how they react to others. We had to observe people and watch how they interact with loved ones , colleges, and friends.

The Procedure of the expiriment was to sit and without looking obvious, watch people as they go about through their morning. We had a 10 question paper we had to answer about what was going on. The questions were basically what are they doing & do they this often.

They were some people just sitting down eating breakfast with a loved one or friend. Some people looked like they did that regularly. My hypothesis was that we weren't going to find anybody because it was raining. I found plenty of people.

  10. I think the experiment was to study the way people are in society. We were watching people and they didn’t know we were. We had to study their body language if we were to far away from them and it was just like we were listening to their conversation. They would act like their normal selves. It was to see how different people react in public places with different types groups of people and see what we thought about them.

First we had to find the people that were on the paper then we had to study what they were doing for a couple minutes then we had to write what we thought their place in society was or what we thought they were like. Then we had to go to the next group of people.

My thoughts were that we were going to see people doing silly things because they didn’t know we were watching. But it wasn’t like that they were just were doing things normal people were doing. People that were in groups and that had company seemed more happy and focused on their conversations rather then where they had to be. People who were by themselves seemed lonelier and more studied on their food and papers. The couples and pairs seemed more secluded like they wanted privacy and like they didn’t want anyone else listening in on them.

  11. The purpose of the experiment from friday was to see the behavior of regular people. We observed people by themselves and with others to see how they act. We had to make assumptions about the persons lifestyle based upon our observations. Overall, I think this experiment made us think about the reason why people act the way they do. Our results showed that everyone is different and everyone acts different.

The procedure to this experiment started out by finding someone wearing a t-shirt and cap to observe them. Then the rest of the procedure was basically finding people that the questions asked for. For example, one question asked to find a family, so we had to search for a family and answer the questions about it. The set up for the lab I would think would be my partner and I sitting next to or close to the individuals we were observing. Once we were close to the people we were going to observe we were all ready to answer the questions.

For some of the people I observed I wasnt sure if what I assumed about their lifestyle was true. My hypothesis at first was that everyone was going to seem really busy but people seemed really shy. Going downtown my first thought was that everyone would be busy with their day but really it was like everyone was keeping to themselves. For example, I thought it would be easy to observe people and what they do but when we started to observe them they didn't really do anything. I couldn't really read the body language from some people, everyone just looked regular. Another example was when my partner and I observed a guy drinking coffee by himself at starbucks. He seemed very shy and reserved like most of the other people we observed on friday.

  12. the purpose of the experiment on friday was to observe people in their natural habitat. lol. we basically had a scavenger hunt for types of people then we had to judge them. we had to look at what they're wearing, predict their age, and that's the only evidence we had of them to judge them on their position in life. that's what we did for psychology. people in the psychology field probably does this everyday, or did.

we were specifically told to find a person wearing a cap or team sweat shirt, then a family, two people having coffee sitting down eating breakfast, and 2 people walking and talking. i think the setup of the lab was random. we had to judge people if they were close or not.. what they're job is.. etc. it was like a scavenger hunt to me.

the outcome of the experiment was sort of weird because i felt like a stalker, secretly observing people. i dont think anyone can be 100% right from just observing people without know them. we can only predict so much but only very few of our predictions are right. from my analysis that points out certain patterns that support my conclusion is that everyone's different. everyone i observed is different. the only thing they have in common is that they're human. but everyone has different lives and opinions. so.. yeh.. that's it.

  13. The purpose of the experiment is to analyze people we don't know. See how they react with other people. Try to guess there life style by the way they look or dress, or the why they handle things.

First you choose a place where there are a lot of different people like as cafe, or a public place like Strawberry Square. Then you sit and watch others discretely. Try to be polite and not obvious. Try to take notice to the small things instead of looking at one specific thing and missing some detail.

Our experiments outcome was very good. I think we made some accurate assumptions (doesn't mean we did, but nice to think so"). We really didn't have a hypothesis. We just followed directions and came up with some good answers. For instance, we assumed the two guys having coffee were familiar with each other, but they didn't have a close relationship, they were familiar because they had shared the same friends. We assumed this because instead of engaging in conversation with each other they were including themselves in the other guys’ conversations and when they did speak to each other it was a short, quiet conversation.

  14. The purpose of the experiment was to watch the behavior of people in their environment. We watched these people so we could observe how different types of people act. Two types that we observed were a couple and a family.

A couple talks a little more closely than a family does. A couple seems more serious whereas a family seems a little carefree. Our setup was sitting in a restaurant, walking in Strawberry Square, and standing at the transfer center.

The hypothesis was that people who were alone would seem bored or lonely. I think that this was proven because the people that I observed that were alone were looking sad.

  15. The purpose of the experiment was to psychologically make assumptions about people based on what they have on or appear to be doing. Another reason for doing the experiment was to observe people and try to interpret how their body language describes them as a person.

The first step in the experiment was to walk over to Strawberry Square or other places of business within the area and find people that are described in the paper to observe. After you found your person or person(s) you had to sit down and obsereve them for a few minutes and write down words that come to mind while you look at them. After you've written down your thoughts, you have to answer the questions based on what you saw using psychology.

I think the experiment had a decent outcome because it was nice to see that there are still old couples out there that are still happily in love. The bad part about the experiment's outcome was that you see people that need some type of help or friend or something and there's nothing you can really do about it. I believe the outcome rejects my hypothesis;which was that I would not be able to look at a person and guess what they do for a living, or tell whether or not they have friends or family or even a partner, because some of the people that I observed made it easy to guess what their status in life was. For example, when i saw the guy sitting and eating breakfast alone i thought that he had either been alone or lost his wife because he had a gloomy look on his face and didn't care to smile much when somebody smiled at him. Another example is when i saw an old couple that were having breakfast while holding hands and still smiling and laughing.

  16. (Synopsis)

We were told to go to public places and observe people's body language and see if our hypothesis about people are true. All of my hypotheses were accepted. Here is why all of them were. There were three separate incidences that concluded that I am a body language expert.
There was a man who was alone and all that I had pre conceived was completely correct. He seemed to drown himself in his paper to drown the world out. His feet firmly planted on the ground but his right leg shaking. His face at times seemed to be smacked with solemn melancholy. Eyes stone cold. Face frowned at times. But his paper seemed to get bigger and bigger as I observed him longer. It seemed like a shield to him, hiding his fragile face.
A couple drinking coffee was another incident. They seemed close to one another, I could tell by the way they were looking at eachother. Eyes a agape and alert of one another. They did not care about anyone else around them. They held eachother's hands and talked about nothing of mere importance probably about something that happened years ago.
My final incident was in the line for getting my food. A question on my observation paper asked what the difference was between people waiting in line being close to eachother, and friends standing close to one another. I saw this in the line. People who knew eachother seemed fine to be close and they began to talk to eachother. But then you has the people who made faces and silenced there mouths. Tart looks on their faces and the quickness to get out of the line when it was their turn validated my hypotheses greatly.

  17. 1. I think that the whole purpose behind this experiment is that we were studying the way people act. Like there were certain times where we had to look at someone’s clothing and determine what type of person they are. Like when we looked at someone’s team based hat and could tell what career they had. I really don’t know how one could really tell just by looking at their hat but I guess.

    2. Well there where certain different procedures that were used on different questions. Like first we had to find a populated place where we could find subjects that would help us answer our questions. Then we found the people for the questions. Like one we had to find a couple sitting down eating breakfast, luckily we went to strawberry square and got it.

    3. I guess we couldn’t really support our hypothesis. Personally because I think that we all had a sort of “first impression” on every person we analyzed. Like the sports hat one. We all thought that he looked like a regular person but who’s to tell if he wasn’t a worker for the capital building. So I think that we had no way of really supporting or not supporting our hypothesis. Our conclusion I guess what that all people certainly don’t act the same way.

  18. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate certain type of people. At certain times, also at situation. I was to look at people walking around in Strawberry Square while they was talking or eating.
The procedure of the experiment was to walk around downtown and find people. People such as wearing a team logo. A couple eating breakfast. A single person eating breakfast. I had to find a family. I had to find people walking and talking at the same time. The only setup was getting the paper and getting a pencil.
The conclusion of the lab was that the lonely people seem to have no interaction with other people. The people with people seem more open with other people.

  19. The purpose of the experiment that we conducted on Friday was to observe people and to watch their actions. Whether they were by themselves or with other people, the point of the experiment was to watch people and to see what they do in their everyday lives.
We were first given a packet and were told to walk around Strawberry Square and observe different types of people. Examples of people that we had to look for were either a family, an individual, or a couple. We then looked at each of these people and observed them up to at least 5 minutes.
I feel that the experiment proved that their are all different types of people in this world. Another thing that this experiment proved was that people act differently depending who they are with. When a person was by themselves they were quiet, but when people were interacting with other people they talked more in the conversation. I also feel that this experiment showed that if you take the time to look at someone you think many different things. Like what are they thinking, do they have a family, where do they work, etc.

  20. To me, the purpose of this experiment was to observe body language in its most natural form. We observed people in Strawberry Square, observing what kind of body language they used when they weren’t aware they were being watched. This experiment was to help the class interpret signs of body language, thus figuring out how people think and behave on a day to day basis.
The steps were simple: we were to go out inconspicuously to Strawberry Square and observe many different types of body language people make. So we just had to travel in groups of two, and watch people without them figuring out they’re being watched. That way the results aren’t influenced by suspicion.
The outcome of this experiment was very interesting, implying that people behave similarly when it comes to body language, though some or a little more extravagant than others. Some are subtle in body language, and I’m almost positive they don’t realize their bodies were speaking for them. So generally, people use many different signs of body language. An Asian guy we watched was waiting for someone. We could tell because he stayed in one spot and kept checking his cell phone. After a while, when we came back, he was becoming impatient. His movements were a tad faster when reaching for his phone. His was becoming irritated. But observations on another person, feeling like the last guy, showed different body language. A guy waiting in line at Starbucks was standing there for a while, so it was only natural he got a bit impatient. He folded his arms, and started shifting where he stood. But I think he realized what he was doing, and covered it with a yawn. After said yawn, he began trying to wait patiently again. My thoughts at first were that people did not like to be watched. This was soon found to be very true. When people spotted me (my mistake…) they almost immediately turned jumpy, nervous, and fidgety. What struck me was that almost instantly afterwards they’d do something like look at their nails, or cross their arms. Maybe this meant they weren’t going to let some student staring at them (again, that was my mistake) get to them. Perhaps it meant, as I thought, that they simply didn’t like to be watched.

  21. The purpose of the experiment we conducted on Friday was to observe people and their actions. When you watch individuals or a group of people you see different actions within each person.

On Friday the lab we did, we basically had to find certain people and observe their actions with themselves or with other people. The set up of the lab was just free observations of the people around you everyday. For example we had to find a man eating breakfast by him self. My group and I had to observe how he may interact with others and what close friends he may or may not have.

From doing this experiment I learned that if you take a couple of minuets to watch someone, many thoughts run through your head about what they could be thinking and why they're alone or what friends they may have.

  22. 1. I think the purpose of the experiment is to see how people act in life. If they don't know they are being watched they act "normal". Watching people in everyday situations without their knowledge helps make a psychological analysis. This helps make an assumption about what the person is doing and why. That is why I think we did the experiment.
    2. One would sit and look inconspicuous while observing a person. They would observe something specific like one person eating alone or a couple or a family. By observing the person or group, the observer would make an assumption from their body language or their volume or maybe even the silence. Finally, the observer would record what they needed to know.
    3. The hypothesis was that close people would look and talk close and families would stay together and look together and alone people would look lonely. Basically, the people would show lots of body language to show how they feel or how they are towards one person or another. The outcome of the experiment was that people act one way or another when they feel that way. Lonely people hold their head down. Close people talk at a close distance. Families look uniform.

  23. The purpose of this experiment was to observe different people in different surroundings and how they react in different situations and how they interact with the people around them and how there body language tells how they feel or what they are thinking.
The prodedure was for us to find various groups of people at Strawberry Square to see what situations they were in and to see what we could tell based on there body language. We observed people and then we wrote down everything that came to our mind.
The hypothesis was supported becuase alot of the words that we used to describe the people came from there body language and how they were reacting to each other.
